About me
Dr Elenna Mapp
The Colourful Chemist
Why "The Colourful Chemist" you might ask?...
One of the things that interested me about Chemistry was all of the bright colours! My PhD had me making colourful crystals with a range of transition metals and organic molecules and analysing them through NMR and X-ray crystallography. It turns out Transition metals, Organic Synthesis and NMR are three topics that A-level students often find the hardest and luckily are my favourites.
Chemistry is my specialism, but other subjects are important too...
I loved studying Mathematics A-level and achieved over 90% in it. Maths is such an important part of Science at GCSE and A-level. I find a major part of my tutor role is helping students learn techniques to minimise mistakes when completing multi-step calculations and translating wordy questions into the correct calculation.
Keeping it fun! (and colourful)
I enjoy doing colourful science experiments with my two primary aged kids and I am often mistaken for a primary school teacher with my multitude of colourful science and maths dresses. I think it is part of what makes me approachable, which is really important for a teacher or tutor.
My Relevant Qualifications:
A grades in Mathematics & Chemistry A-levels.
1st class (Hons.) BSc. in Chemistry with Industrial Experience from Cardiff University.
PhD in Synthetic Chemistry from Cardiff University.
PGDE (Level 6 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
QTLS-Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills
Up to date DBS and Safeguarding training.
My Experience
I have taught Chemistry and Applied Science up to A-level and Access to HE medicine for 15 years in well-respected sixth form colleges. I have developed courses to support my students to study for the BMAT, Chemistry Challenge and Chemistry Olympiad.
I have worked as Head of Chemistry and Head of Science at Worcester College but I am now a full time Chemistry tutor and I am finding it very rewarding. Alongside this I am an associate STEM facilitator, so train and mentor other Chemistry teachers and run courses for the Science Learning Partnership.
I have experience and training in teaching students with Dyslexia, ASD and APD.
Every year I get excellent student feedback and have been described as genuinely caring. My lessons have been described as outstanding, inclusive, fun and interactive and my students have regularly achieved outstanding results and gone on to study Science, Engineering and Medical courses at Oxford, Cambridge and other top universities.
